1. How do scientists learn about the world? Scientists learn about the world through the scientific method. Scientists observe, hypothesize, experiment, and collect data to make conclusions. They make observations by looking at historical records and using instruments such as seismometers to measure the motion of seismic waves, which then tell us about the interior of Earth. P and S waves arrive at different times and by that information scientists can determine how thick the layer is and what it consists of. This class definitely met this goal. Through observations and collecting data, scientists have determined the characteristics of the three different types or rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. For instance, in the metamorphic rocks lab, I learned that scientists identify a rock is metamorphic by determining which minerals are present and at what temperatures they form. Igneous rocks are formed from magma and sedimentary rocks are formed from sediments that are deposite d from the air and water. 2. How does experiencing the universe scientifically differ from experiencing it in other ways? Experiencing the universe scientifically differs from experiencing it in other ways, such as rationalism and personal experience. Thinking scientifically gives an objective and precise way to generate knowledge. On the other hand, rationalism is the knowledge which is deduced from premises.
